The Price? By trying to include driverless as a comfort feature in cars that have grown steadily 'obese' (SUV trend), automakers have compromised AV development. Either use autonomous drive systems in small (sleek) cars or don't deploy them in what may be labelled as ‘real estate on wheels’, big cars in which people feel isolated from traffic and tend to lower their attention level. The SUV segment accounts for 42% of total passenger vehicle sales. So, why hasn’t the big elephant in the boardroom, the car? AV technology and SUVs or big MPVs aren’t exactly a great combination… New technology tends to ‘reformat’ products and services. Like what made Personal Communication a lot smarter, we need some sort of ‘smart device’ that will improve Personal Mobility.Ĭar needs a Reformat to benefit from automated drive systems. For this reason ‘alone’, the reportedly soon to arrive Apple car better be not some oversized Bang & Olufsen styled SUV or MPV. Car travel from A to B is basically an equation - of using space and energy, of causing emissions, ensure road safety, deal with traffic, deploy automation. ![]()
